The Hotel Alpenrock reached out to me to do tintypes for their opening weekend party held at the Edwin restaurant in the hotel. It was a really fun event with friends in the Breckenridge community, hotel guests, skiiers, and my friends over at Angels Envy Whiskey. This was also the soft opening of their hidden speakeasy Canary as well. A super cool spot with some fantastic wallpaper. And that is something I never comment on so you know it's cool.
Wet Plate Collodion is a historic photographic process developed in the 1850s, where images are created on metal or glass plates using silver-based chemistry. The common name is known as tintype. They are incredibly finicky and take nearly 15 minutes each to produce. They arent feasible for an event. I have created my new hybrid process still using the historic camera and lenses but with medium format digital capture. It's the same image without all the hassel. It's not a tidy photobooth like we are used to. I generally use natural surrounding as my backdrop when photographing outdoors, but I bring a simple backdrop, my lights, and my Agfa Ansco 8x10 View Camera and my petzval lens.
It's a great conversation piece for history nerds, camera geeks, and people who appreciate old handmade things. I love talking with people about how I got into this, how I found everything, and how it works.
Traditional tintypes are still very special and I am very proud when I make a single image - something that's lost with digital. Doing the hybrid process makes it easier to do events and share what makes these images special. I LOVE large format photography. It's just so cool and special.
If you have an event coming up and want some super unique options for your spectators and guests, shoot me and email. I would love to come to your event and share the history and to take some timeless portraits. It’s the perfect blend of art and memory-making—ideal for rustic weddings, corporate retreats, and holiday gatherings.
My tintype photo booth is available for corporate events and conventions or even street fairs. Images are ready in a matter of minutes and ready to go right away. I produce 5x7 metallic prints on-site. All portraits are created using a 150 year old historic camera and lenses.
