The Creative Session

The idea for the session was bold, fun, and incredibly memorable. We wanted to create a set of images that would transport them to another time while incorporating their love for dark, gothic-inspired aesthetics. The setting was intimate, surrounded by their closest family and friends, who added to the creative energy of the day.

Outfits & Props

Savanna and Ben’s outfits were nothing short of spectacular. Savanna’s wedding dress was paired with a dramatic fur coat, adding a touch of elegance and warmth to the otherwise ethereal look. Ben’s wardrobe, complete with a sword and dark accessories, gave the shoot an unexpected but thrilling edge. The addition of animal skulls—particularly a deer skull—enhanced the gothic vibes, making the photos feel hauntingly beautiful.

The Tintype Process

As a tintype photographer based in Colorado, I specialize in capturing moments through the process of wet-plate collodion. This historic technique, which dates back to the mid-1800s, involves creating a direct positive image on a metal plate. It’s a slow, deliberate process that produces unique, one-of-a-kind photographs with an unmistakable vintage charm.

New Hybrid Process

My new hybrid process has all the style of traditional chemical portraits, but much safer, faster, and no limitations. I use my camera and lenses from the late 1880's but with medium format digital capture. All the benefits without any of the downsides.

During this session, we utilized the gothic atmosphere of the props, outfits, and their energy, paired with the tintype process, to create photos that were both nostalgic and fresh. The resulting images felt like a modern twist on old-world portraits, beautifully capturing the raw emotion and intensity of their connection.

Family & Friends

The session was intimate, with a few family members and close friends present to witness the shoot. Their presence added a personal touch, and it was wonderful to see everyone so invested in the creative process. The collaboration between Savanna, Ben, their loved ones, and myself as the photographer made this short and sweet session truly special.

Why Choose Tintypes for Your Portrait Session?

If you’re looking for a truly unique and creative portrait experience, tintype photography is the perfect choice. The process captures moments in time in a way that digital photography can’t replicate. Tintypes are tactile, beautiful, and timeless, offering a vintage look that never goes out of style.

Whether it’s for a wedding, family session, or personal portrait, tintype photos create an atmosphere of nostalgia while still feeling fresh and contemporary. Plus, the process itself is fascinating—watching the image emerge on the metal plate as the chemicals react is a magical experience.

Conclusion

The private gothic tintype photo session with Savanna and Ben was one of the most enjoyable and creatively fulfilling experiences I’ve had as a tintype photographer. The combination of their gothic-inspired outfits, unique props, and the historic tintype process produced a set of images that were as fun as they were beautiful. I’m so glad to have been a part of this unforgettable moment in their lives!
